How Cell Phones and Screens Disrupt Your Child’s Sleep

New research shows that using electronic devices such as cell phones, tablets, and computers at night is associated with children and teens losing sleep time and quality. Even those who do not use their devices in their bedrooms experience interrupted sleep and daytime sleepiness. The study analyzed data from hundreds of studies conducted between 2011 and 2015, involving over 125,000 children. The research found a strong link between bedtime device use and inadequate sleep quantity, poor sleep quality, and excessive daytime sleepiness. The lights and sounds emitted by the devices, as well as the content itself, may be too stimulating, disrupting the circadian rhythm and delaying the release of melatonin, a hormone that induces tiredness. These findings are not surprising, as previous research has shown that sleep plays a crucial role in brain development, memory, attention, and overall health. Experts recommend establishing good sleep hygiene, which includes removing devices from the bedroom, having a quiet sleep environment, and limiting exposure to light before bedtime. Additionally, it is important to have a regular sleep schedule and avoid stimulants such as alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine before bedtime. A “gadget-free transition time” of at least 30 minutes before sleep is also recommended.
