Canada: America’s NAFTA Foe, Not Mexico

America and Canada have one of the largest trade relationships in the world. President Donald Trump recently met with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the first time and expressed that the trade relationship between the two countries is outstanding. However, the trade relationship has had its ups and downs, with trade wars, acts of retaliation, allegations of dumping, and job losses. Despite the challenges, most leaders and experts agree that the trade ties between the two nations are strong and mostly positive. Trump has often criticized Mexico and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), but rarely mentions Canada, even though there have been more NAFTA dispute claims against Canada than against Mexico. Canada has imposed stiff tariffs on the United States, and the two sides recently resolved a dispute over meat. Trump wants to renegotiate NAFTA, which will be a major topic in his meeting with Trudeau.
