Tiger Woods could potentially be part of the US Ryder Cup team, according to Zach Johnson.

Ahead of the Sony Open in Hawaii, US captain Johnson stated that he wouldn’t rule out selecting Woods for the tournament if he doesn’t qualify automatically.

“I would only consider having him on the team if he is putting up competitive numbers and scores,” Johnson said at a media conference on Wednesday.

He added, “And then, that discussion would be had with the other team members, specifically with him. I trust that Tiger Woods is extremely invested in this team and the future Cups.”

Johnson also acknowledged that Woods’ health could pose complications for his inclusion in the team.

Last year, Johnson confirmed that Woods would be part of the US Ryder Cup team “in some capacity” and that Woods had made it a priority.

“I can’t tell you right now if he will be here next year, but he will be a part of this team in some capacity,” Johnson stated.

However, Woods’ recent injuries and health issues may make it difficult for him to participate, according to the US Ryder Cup captain.

Woods has been plagued by injuries, with his playing time severely impacted since a car accident in February 2021.

The golfer withdrew from the Hero World Challenge in December due to foot pain and has struggled with movement in recent events.

In an interview with Golf Digest, Woods expressed the possibility of playing select events in the future rather than full-time.

He stated, “It’s an unfortunate reality, but it’s my reality. And I understand it and accept it.”

The Ryder Cup, which takes place biennially between the US and Europe, will be held in Italy for the first time this year. The competition will be held from September 25 to October 1 at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club near Rome.

In 2021, Team US reclaimed the Ryder Cup with a dominant performance against Europe at Whistling Straits.
